\"Habitat<\/span><\/p>\n

When Sandra heard she would soon become a Habitat homeowner, she says it was\u00a0<\/span>like<\/span>\u00a0the stars aligned. Everything in her life had led her to that moment; all the years of perseverance were coming to fruition. Having a home meant she would not have to move every year, trying to find an affordable place to rent.\u00a0<\/span>After moving 18 times in her life,\u00a0<\/span>s<\/span>he would finally have long-term stability for her family to grow and thrive.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u201cI got to build my home like my parents built ours,\u201d Sandra says. \u201cIt\u2019s an amazing feeling to see your house go up<\/span>\u00a0and be there with all the people who helped.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Friends and colleagues throughout the Portland community came out to help build her home from the ground up. They stood by her<\/span>\u00a0for many years<\/span>\u00a0throughout her times of struggle and rallied for her success. She was no longer the young girl in\u00a0<\/span>Tonaya<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0Jalisco running around, dipping her hands and feet in the cement while her parents built her childhood home with their own hands.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAs I built my house for my own children, the feeling is hard to describe,\u201d Sandra says, \u201cIt\u2019s kind of like standing on top of the roof saying, \u2018<\/span>Oh<\/span>\u00a0my God, this is mine, I did this.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Everything she has done, Sandra says, she has done for her children.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI now know the struggle my mother felt when she was building our home back in Mexico. She never let us feel it,\u201d Sandra remembers. \u201cMy goal now is that my kids don\u2019t feel it<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>t<\/span>hat they only see\u00a0<\/span>that hard work pays off<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and, <\/span>with the right support<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0all is\u00a0<\/span>possible<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Back before Sandra experienced the weight of life\u2019s turmoil, she remembers a warm childhood filled with memories of helping her mom make tamales and\u00a0<\/span>bu<\/span>\u00f1<\/span>uelos<\/span>\u00a0in their kitchenette, washing off the summer heat in their outdoor shower, running around her small neighborhood, barefoot. She didn\u2019t know then that her mother had to sell tamales door to door, make\u00a0<\/span>one\u00a0<\/span>h<\/span>undred<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>bu<\/span>\u00f1<\/span>uelos<\/span>\u00a0to sell at events<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>in<\/span>\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0local plaza<\/span>, and sew neighbors\u2019 clothes all to keep a roof over their heads while her father worked in the U.S. to pay for their work visas.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When she, her elder sister, and mother joined her father in Pomona, California, work was an everyday\u00a0<\/span>fact of life<\/span>. While she stayed with her aunt and attended school, her parents<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>had to live apart with another family member<\/span>\u00a0to<\/span>\u00a0work<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>around the clock<\/span>\u00a0until they saved enough to move to\u00a0<\/span>Merced<\/span>. Her father got a job overseeing the land on a turkey farm and secured a three-bedroom house on the property as part of the contract. He tended to the farm day and night while her mother woke every morning at 3 am to work in the fields.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Once Sandra was 12-years-old, she joined her mother; waking\u00a0<\/span>most\u00a0<\/span>morning<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0to pick plums, cherries, almonds, whatever the season would bring. Then she would bus to school with remnants of the fields sticking to her clothes and purpling her fingers. Her day\u2019s work helped pay for her family\u2019s attorney fees in the process of gaining their\u00a0<\/span>permanent<\/span>\u00a0residency<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Life in\u00a0<\/span>Merced\u00a0<\/span>reminded Sandra of life back in\u00a0<\/span>Tonaya<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0so remote and expansive. She remembers climbing trees to play with squirrels and riding a\u00a0<\/span>banana-seat<\/span>\u00a0bike around the farm.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think that was my first real experience of security,\u201d Sandra recalls. \u201cThose are warm memories.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Then, when she was sixteen, she became a\u00a0<\/span>permanent resident<\/span>\u00a0and her family moved to Oregon. She had been uprooted, that sense of security gone. In this new state, where it was always cold, cloudy, and constantly raining, she hated that her parents brought her to such a place.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Soon she found refuge within a group of friends at school who became like family. They made sure she had enough resources to get through the day and would fight for her, if she needed them to. Through them, she learned what it meant to take care of one another, to have each other\u2019s back through and\u00a0<\/span>through<\/span>. After class and working her shift at K-Mart, she would meet up with them to go have fun.\u00a0<\/span>But soon<\/span>, fun turned to substance abuse. It\u00a0<\/span>wasn\u2019t<\/span>\u00a0until she was 17 and pregnant with her first child that she decided to get clean.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While Sandra never relapsed, her journey was still fraught with struggle. As an independent mother, she knew she had to provide for her children and keep them safe, which sometimes came with large sacrifices. To keep her burdens at bay, she poured herself into work until she was ready to leave an abusive relationship and rebuild her life.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>She found an apartment next to a high school friend, secured a second job at a local nonprofit, and balanced her work and family life in addition to taking\u00a0<\/span>classes. Soon that friend would become her husband and that job, a career as a data analyst for The Pathfinder Network where she\u00a0<\/span>partners<\/span>\u00a0with families to rebuild their own lives.\u00a0<\/span>And<\/span>\u00a0while they moved 18 times before purchasing their home with Habitat for Humanity, Sandra and her family have continued to thrive despite their hardships.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNow I\u2019m financially stable because of all the things that lined up,\u201d she says. \u201cI have a home that I pay 0% interest on, my mortgage is under a thousand dollars, medical bills are less because we\u2019re all healthy and we have a good environment. My kids are happy and thriving because of everything\u00a0good\u00a0that\u2019s happening in our lives. I\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0have to worry about paying rent or putting food on the table. I have a home I can call mine.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It\u2019s<\/span> been seven years since Sandra moved into the 45-home community in Portland\u2019s Centennial neighborhood. <\/span>She\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0formed bonds with her neighbors who helped build each other\u2019s homes and now serve on the Homeowner\u2019s Association together. Their children\u00a0<\/span>surpassed language and cultural differences to make lifelong friends with other kids in their community.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>I take walks with my dog and my\u00a0<\/span>neighbors<\/span>\u00a0say<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u2018<\/span>H<\/span>ello<\/span>.\u2019<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>We l<\/span>ook<\/span>\u00a0out for each other in times that emergencies come up or others are traveling.\u00a0<\/span>I can walk my qui<\/span>et<\/span>\u00a0block and look around<\/span>\u00a0at<\/span>\u00a0all the different cultures and traditions each family brings. It is a\u00a0<\/span>blessing<\/span>\u00a0that<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>not\u00a0<\/span>many can say they have<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Isaac<\/span>\u00a0is now 21 and\u00a0<\/span>Carmen<\/span>\u00a0is 19.\u00a0<\/span>They\u00a0<\/span>both<\/span>\u00a0graduated from Reynolds High School and are learning to navigate their adult lives.<\/span>\u00a0Her 15-year-old daughter,\u00a0<\/span>Nela<\/span>, is excelling in scho<\/span>ol<\/span>\u00a0and while\u00a0<\/span>her 11-year-old,\u00a0<\/span>Emilia<\/span>, is challenged by remote learning<\/span>, she is still a burst of energy and lights up a room. Sandra\u2019s husband, Freddie, works as a barber and finds time to help his brother partner with local youth to build life skills.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Her home serves a central hub for her family. When they come to visit, she has a seat for them at her kitchen table and a pillow for them to rest their heads at night. Her home is also a memory bank. She has kept every school project her children have made throughout the years. She wants her children to know how much she loves and values them, and having a steady place to call home provides a safe place to keep all those memories alive.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>No matter what challenges life brings my kids they know this is their safe home<\/span>,\u201d Sandra says.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201cA<\/span>nd<\/span>\u00a0here or\u00a0<\/span>there,<\/span>\u00a0I\u00a0<\/span>sometimes<\/span>\u00a0get their friends that need\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>safe place and a hot meal<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>which\u00a0<\/span>I am more than happy to\u00a0<\/span>provi<\/span>d<\/span>e<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As for Sandra, she\u00a0<\/span>continues to be a\u00a0<\/span>well of generosity. Once she was able to find stability in homeownership, she immediately wanted to give back to the community. She has served on the board of the Oregon Food Bank and Multnomah County Library Committee.\u00a0<\/span>She\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0volunteered with Rock the Block<\/span>\u00a0event\u00a0<\/span>and continues to empower women through her stewardship at\u00a0<\/span>Soroptimist<\/span>\u00a0Portland.\u00a0<\/span>Her life experiences serve as a resource guide for people throughout the community.<\/span>\u00a0When\u00a0<\/span>someone needs a recommendation for local services, she is often the one they call. Sandra says she<\/span>\u2019s thankful to be in such a position<\/span>\u00a0and meet amazing people throughout Portland and beyond.<\/span> She<\/span>\u00a0is also a big advocate for Habitat for Humanity; sharing her story with clients and community members so they can know stability is within reach.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe security is like a huge weight lifted off of you,\u201d Sandra says. \u201cI\u2019m thankful for Habitat and everything they\u2019ve provided for me. When my children grow up, they can let me have a room in this home with them. Or maybe I can retire in Mexico, which I would love.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
