\"Habitat<\/span><\/p>\n

Deloris\u2019 life tells a story of persistent, even demanding<\/span>,<\/span> growth.<\/span> <\/span>Growing up<\/span> in<\/span> Nort<\/span>h<\/span>east<\/span> Portland, <\/span>she was not yet 10 years old and <\/span>helping her working parents by taking care of her siblings, helping with dinner, and looking after the home. <\/span>Through these early years of heavy responsibility, <\/span>she <\/span>c<\/span>ites<\/span> her capacity to deal with stress<\/span> and hardship. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Then, at <\/span>just 17, her family <\/span>was suddenly uprooted<\/span> from <\/span>their<\/span> <\/span>home<\/span> in <\/span>the Kin<\/span>g<\/span> Neighborhood<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span>T<\/span>he City <\/span>of Portland <\/span>used eminent domain to take her home under <\/span>a<\/span> <\/span>then-active Urban Renewal platform t<\/span>hat caused the displacement of thousands of North Portland homeowners<\/span>\u2014an overwhelming majority were<\/span> Black <\/span>residents<\/span>. <\/span>After relocating to <\/span>15<\/span>th<\/span> and Prescott<\/span>, her family re-settled and<\/span> <\/span>was forced<\/span> to begin<\/span> anew. <\/span> <\/span>
\nNow, almost 50 years later, Deloris is partnering with Habitat to become a first-time homeowner<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span>Soon<\/span> she will <\/span>purchase a home in the Portsmouth neighborhood and join<\/span> <\/span>a 12-home community <\/span>near where she first grew up<\/span>. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

When reflecting on what owning a home means <\/span>to her <\/span>in light of that <\/span>early<\/span> displacement, Deloris says calmly:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBuying a home feels like lying under a warm blanket on a cold day, it heats up my inner self.\u201d  <\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Although she experienced displacement early on in her life,<\/span> Deloris<\/span>\u2019 character<\/span> <\/span>never<\/span> <\/span>dissolved<\/span>, <\/span>instead<\/span>, <\/span>it anchored <\/span>her<\/span> resolve<\/span>.<\/span> Since then, <\/span>as a single-mother, grandmother, and adopted great-aunt, she <\/span>worked against long odds to become a success while always lending her heart and home to others in need. <\/span>And<\/span>, at a proud 64 years of age, she has just as much to enjoy looking back on as she does to looking forward. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

By the 90s, <\/span>Deloris t<\/span>ook<\/span> a big step <\/span>in her journey <\/span>and move<\/span>d<\/span> <\/span>her family to<\/span> <\/span>Mississippi<\/span> to be near extended<\/span> <\/span>family<\/span>. <\/span>The sun was warm<\/span> <\/span>and life<\/span>,<\/span> as she describes<\/span> it<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>was peaceful. Then<\/span>, just as she <\/span>was settled<\/span> into her new life, <\/span>Hurricane Katrina swept through<\/span> and destroyed everything in sight. At t<\/span>hat<\/span> point, <\/span>Deloris decided to return home and make a fresh start<\/span> in Portland. Yet, after looking for a home to buy in her <\/span>original<\/span> <\/span>neighborhood in North Portland, she was shocked at how high <\/span>home values had become. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

S<\/span>he <\/span>found<\/span> an apartment, and, yet again, began to re<\/span>settle into her new life in Portland. <\/span>By this time, <\/span>she <\/span>had<\/span> <\/span>raised her children<\/span> and was helping raise her granddaughter when she <\/span>made the decision to <\/span>go back to school and earn her <\/span>degree<\/span> in Child and Family Developmen<\/span>t<\/span> while also working full-time. Her determination <\/span>didn\u2019t<\/span> stop her there<\/span>, though<\/span>. She went back again, this time earning her Master\u2019s Degree<\/span> in <\/span>Diagnosis Psychology<\/span>. In <\/span>her<\/span> <\/span>education,<\/span> Deloris set an example for her granddaughter about the power of persistence. <\/span>This hard work then landed her a <\/span>good job at Cascadia <\/span>Behavioral Health Care working as a Case Manager for housing, connecting<\/span> Portlanders<\/span> experiencing homelessness<\/span> with the services that helped to get them off the street and into a home. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

All the while helping to get others into long-term housing, she <\/span>worked slowly to rebuild her credit, set new goals, <\/span>and <\/span>eventually began working with Catholic Charities and Home Forward<\/span>. She <\/span>remembers <\/span>her case managers push<\/span>ing<\/span> her to believe that homeownership was a reachable target<\/span>, <\/span>b<\/span>ut she <\/span>just didn\u2019t think it was possible. <\/span> <\/span>She questioned <\/span>tackl<\/span>ing<\/span> such a big task at her age<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

With a village of support behind her, she began the arduous process of saving and qualifying for various resources<\/span> that <\/span>would <\/span>put her on the long road to becoming a homeowner. During this time, she learned she qualified for the City of Portland\u2019s <\/span>N\/NE Preference Policy<\/span><\/a> that<\/span> <\/span>prioritizes residents who have generational ties to North and Northeast Portland as well as those who were<\/span> affected by<\/span> the<\/span> City\u2019s harmful urban renewal practices.<\/span><\/p>\n

Later, her supporting team at Home Forward<\/span> <\/span>connected her with<\/span> Habitat for Humanity. When she had a meeting with Habitat\u2019s Homeownership Manager, she thought to herself, \u201cOh, this sounds great!\u201d She applied and waited. <\/span>She<\/span> <\/span>wasn\u2019t<\/span> confident about her odds. She was still saving, still building credit, and was busy helping raise her <\/span>newborn<\/span> great-nephew<\/span> King<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span>Then<\/span> <\/span>she<\/span> <\/span>received<\/span> a call. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>I thought I was going to die\u2014like I had won the lottery! You can\u2019t breathe, you can\u2019t think, you can’t even comprehend.”<\/span><\/p>\n

In just a few months, Deloris will move <\/span>into her home <\/span>and return to a neighborhood she once call home. She is grateful<\/span> that in buying her first home, she will <\/span>rejoin a community<\/span> she grew up in and <\/span>leave a new legacy for her granddaughter and young nephew. <\/span>She says she feels secure.<\/span> <\/span>\u201c<\/span>K<\/span>nowing<\/span> they have a permanent place where memories are built and nourished and hopefully, they will continue the tradition for generations to come.\u201d <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPu<\/span>rchasing a home makes me excited because I feel I have control and ambition over my life. Being able to<\/span> purchase and leave a legacy for my granddaughter whom I raised and now my young great nephew, means they will have a better start to life.<\/span> <\/span>Legacies have to start somewhere<\/span>,<\/span> why not <\/span>here<\/span>?<\/span>\u201d <\/span> <\/span>
