\n\u201cI\u2019m someone who likes to lean into community; engage and support people around me that are <\/span>disadvantaged due to societal structures, especially as a black woman<\/span>,\u201d says Nina Byrd, Co-Chair of Habitat for Humanity Portland\/Metro East\u2019s Ambassador Council: <\/span>Habitat Ambassadors are leaders and rising leaders in the business community helping Habitat to engage like-minded friends and colleagues to explore strategic partnerships, raise funds, and advocate for issues vital to Habitat\u2019s work.<\/span><\/em>
\nAs a woman driven by intentionality, Nina\u2019s made it her business to connect purpose with action. She\u2019s made a career in corporate strategy and utilizes that keen eye for organizational development in every volunteer role she\u2019s taken on. During her first year with the council, Nina helped raise $80,000 in support of safe and stable communities in Portland. Now as Co-Chair alongside <\/span>Steven Phan<\/span><\/a>, she says she feels an extra responsibility to facilitate even further growth in strengthening the connections that bond us together as a city.<\/span>
\nThat growth will only be strengthened by the Ambassador Council\u2019s inclusive design with each member coming from all corners of Portland and beyond.<\/span>
\n\u201cI see the Ambassador Council as a think tank, an incubator for experimentation, and a bridge to the larger community,\u201d she says. \u201cWe all provide a 360-degree view into Portland. Coming from diverse backgrounds and professions, we\u2019re each a unique puzzle piece of the larger community, the bigger picture.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>
\n\"\"For Nina, the <\/span>newly formed <\/span>Council is \u201ccentral to Habitat for Humanity\u201d and she\u2019s exactly right. Not only did they collectively fundraise all throughout<\/span> last <\/span>year, each member also volunteered on our build sites and events, prepped lumber for our <\/span>Playhouse Experience<\/span><\/a>, facilitated group activities at our dedications and summer celebrations, and invited all their friends to a kickoff party to spur Habitat\u2019s Give!Guide campaign. Although jam-packed with ways to engage, <\/span>Nina never<\/span> tires from supporting Habitat\u2019s mission.\u00a0<\/span>
\nShe first set boots on a Habitat build site back in New York. She was 16 and naturally handy\u2014coming <\/span>from a family in which community was central to their life’s work<\/span>\u2014but building a home that would become someone\u2019s sanctuary was a completely different endeavor.<\/span> Still, her family was full of pioneers and she wasn\u2019t afraid of a challenge.<\/span> She remembers the weight of the hammer in her hand as she framed living room walls. Nina imagined a family entering that room after a long day and finding solace in a space she helped to create.\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u201cThis is going to be someone\u2019s new home,\u201d she said. \u201cYou want to make sure that you\u2019ve done your best work.\u201d<\/span>
\nIt was an incredibly humbling experience and it\u2019s something that stuck with her all these years.\u00a0<\/span>
\nFrom<\/span> building in<\/span> New York to Alabama and Texas, Nina <\/span>recently <\/span>anchor<\/span>ed her family<\/span> in Portland and immediately threw out a line to Habitat for Humanity. Having put in <\/span>hundreds<\/span> of volunteer hours with Habitat affiliates along the way, she brings a wealth of experience to every opportunity. From fundraising, to organizational development, to community engagement and more, Nina\u2019s toolkit is packed with a long history rich in civic engagement and social justice<\/span> for vulnerable communities<\/span>.<\/span>
\nThrough working with local businesses and civic engagement, Nina feels deeply tied to<\/span> the Portland community. <\/span>\u201cI\u2019ve fallen in love with Portland for all that it offers and what I see it can become.\u201d S<\/span>he\u2019s setting roots and making big plans for her and her family\u2019s future.<\/span>
\n\u201cIt\u2019s clear to me now that I\u2019m investing in a <\/span>sustainable community <\/span>for my children and grandchildren to really be proud of,\u201d says the newlywed.\u00a0<\/span>
\nFor Nina, everything all ties back to Habitat for Humanity\u2019s vision: a world where everyone has a decent place to <\/span>call home<\/span>. During our latest <\/span>Home Dedication<\/span><\/a> in December, Nina was reminded of that warmth in knowing that all her efforts directly impact the community.\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u201cIt\u2019s an experience where people have a sense of true joy,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s the way a kid’s face lights up when they go into the room, they turn on the light and they say, \u2018This is <\/span>my<\/span><\/i> room!\u201d It\u2019s often the first room a child has ever had to themself. \u201cThat intangible moment: to be part of<\/span> an intimate<\/span> shared experience<\/span> is unexplainable<\/span>; we\u2019re part of each other\u2019s lives forever.
